I never thought I would find myself staring into the depths of a wastewater lift station, a pumping station that moves wastewater, or sewage, from a lower elevation to a higher elevation. Though perhaps I should have been prepared for this situation after the wild ride that has been 2020 and 2021 to date. Anyone who has been to Rollingwood probably noticed the steep inclining and declining residential roads throughout the city. Though less than a square mile in size, Rollingwood has so many points of elevation changes that there are seven different lift stations in our city. Seven lift stations mean seven different points that all require electricity to manage the wastewater produced by the homes they service. When the power to these stations is off for an extended amount of time, and snowy and icy roads cause hazardous driving conditions that make it difficult to reach these lift stations throughout the rolling hills of our city, a problem, or more accurately a crisis, is created.
